Velnet is happy to say that all our cPanel servers now have PHP 4.4.4 and PHP 5.2.1. running on them concurrently.
This concurrent version was decided due to an increase in demand for php5 and the fact that an out right upgrade will
spell disaster because most of the other sites on the server runs the php4 version.
PHP4 is still running as default while to use PHP5, you will need to have the extension .php5 in your files.
Example:
http://www.velnetweb.co.uk/info.php5
Alternatively, you can make standard .php and other files executable by PHP5 instead of PHP4 by adding the following line in a .htaccess file:
Code:
AddHandler application/x-httpd-php5 .php .php4 .php3 .phtml
Additionally, PHP5 will read the same php.ini files that you have setup for PHP4. Please submit a support ticket at www.velnetsupport.co.uk
if you have any questions.

The launch of the European Community’s .eu domain name happened with with a big bang on the 7th of April.
According to the EUID (the over seeing registrar) over 1.3Million domain names have been registered so far with about 700,000 names registered on the opening day of registration. The demand on the system was such that servers login the name applications were regularly off during the first day.
To help with a bit of recall, the introduction of this domain name extension was done in stages. The first 2 stages were reserved for companies, individual and families with special interests such as registered trademarks family names to register their interests and gain control of domain names that are related to them before someone else does. These period lasted from 07/12/2005 till 07/04/2006 and it was broken into 2 equal halves.
During this 4 month period about 300.000 .eu extension domain names were registered. Compared to the number of names registered on the first day of the Land-Rush stage the amount pales in comparison.
According to the data provided by the EUiD, over half of the domain names are far registered to German interest while the the UK comes a distant second registering slightly higher than half the number registered by the German.

Patience they say, is a virtue. And after the long wait by us, common men, to get a .eu domain name extension the time for the come one come all registration is near. It is so close I can almost touch it.
After the Sun Rise I period (07/12/2005 - 07/02/2006) and Sun Rise II Period that started immediately after period I ends on the 07/04/2006 at 10.00 O’clock BLT. The restraining dam of restricted registration will be opened. This is the first come first served period known as Land Rush.
The sunrise period was created to allow organizations and companies to register their names thus protecting them against being registered by name speculators and cyber squarters. But the good news is that beginning from the 7th of April, .eu registration is opened to all (who qualify that is). Due to the anticipated rush for registration, some accredited agents have started pre-registering and if you think they are crazy please read this; - on the 7th Feb. EURID got 71,235 application in one hour and that is just throught the sluice gate but what do you think will happen when the Flood gate is opened? Your guess is as good as mine. I do not want to rubber stamp any agent here but I believe they that the early birds get the most worms.
The summary table below (complements of EURID) will help you to determine
1, if you are qualified to apply for a .eu domain name and
2, when you can apply for the domain name.

What is DNS?
DNS is an acronym for Domain Name System ( some also call it Domain Name Server). This system is used to associate a domain name (e.g. www.velnetweb.co.uk) with one or more IP addresses. DNS are easier to remember than the IP (Internet Protocol) address of a domain name or even a computer on the internet. An IP address works like a telephone number to a computer. Every computer has its own unique IP but just like a phone number, IP addresses can sometimes be difficult to remember. So, can you imagine how nice it will be just to be able to call your friends just by dialling/typing their names from your phone? To just dial Velnet support instead of 08707 440 151 would have been a trip of the century for many. The DNS works in a similar fashion. Rather than having to remember, 67.15.70.8 for this domain you only have to remember www.velnetweb.com.
How It Works
When a customer buys a domain name from VELNET, two IP addresses are generally assigned to the domain name. These IP addresses are also called nameservers and it indicates the server on which this domain name shall reside. One of this IP addresses will be the Primary and the other, the Secondary Nameserver. Before this domain can be fully active on the Internet, it will need about 48 hours maximum to completely propagate. During this period all services attached to this domain name may not function well. VELNET sometimes put a placeholder on some of its servers but sometimes not. When there is no placeholder on the server, a customer will get a 404 error message if he tries to check his site in a browser before he uploads his site. In order to be able to use Velnet hosting service, i.e. upload your web content to the VELNET Server, or receive/send email, or have your website site displayed in browsers, you will need to point your domain DNS at one of our servers e.g. modify your Primary and Secondary Nameservers to: ns1.velnet.net and ns2.velnet.net respectively.
How do I manage/update my Nameservers?
This question is best answered by your domain name registrar so should this need arise it is best you get in touch with them.
In VELNET the DNS of all Nominet registered domain name are modified for customers by assigned staff. while the generic top level domain names like .com/ .net/ .info etc. can be configured via http://www3.velnetweb.co.uk/cgi-bin/manage.cgi.
Remember that when all fail contact the support staff of your registrar you can do this via http://www3.velnetweb.co.uk/cgi-bin/manage.cgi or through the support link from your user login http://www.velnetweb.co.uk/velnet/
How do I know if my DNS is propagating?
This can be done in various ways but here are two simplest ways.
1) Do a WHOIS Search . A WHOIS Search Engine will give you information about every domain name that is registered. This engine is available on our site www.velnetweb.co.uk.
2)Simply type your domain name into your web browser. If you see the VELNET Placeholder page or the simple Forbidden page, then your domain name has propagated to our Server.

I will like to apologise to my very proffesional minded collegues and hope that they will find this an interseting read. I just had this urge to share my thoughts with others and hope that they will share theirs with me too.
When I was a toddler I used to see Xmas as an opportunity to feast and get new shoes and cloths. I am from Lagos, Nigeria you see. And it was fun visiting families and friends christians and muslims alike during this time eating from one home to the other and believe it or not we used to even get tips (for a lack of better word to discribe this) for visiting and the more the money given, the better the chance of that household to see me next year.
But now with my wide knowledge and understanding of other cultures, I realised that although in all it is fun and relaxing -thank God for holidays- the origin of it was with Jesus Christ. It is a mass to celebrate the humble birth of Jesus in the manger. It is actually a mass to celebrate the birth of Christ. Although now there is no mass for me to attend, I think in the mist of the eating and drinking we still need to remember whose birthday this holiday is to celebrate.
It came as a shock to me when I first learnt that the 25th of December was not the day he was born and as such there are other christmas days depending on your christian faith or even no celebration at all if you are a Jehovah Witness. I think I will rather have a christmas than not have it at all.
If you read this blog. It will be nice if you can take the time to just share what christmas means to you and if you chose not to the choice is yours
I wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

( the registry operator for .eu domain name ) has finally began accepting applications for the much awaited Sunrise Phase 1 on the 7th of December 2005. This first phase which will last till the 6th of February is meant only for Public Bodies and Holders of Registered Trademark. This will then be followed by the Sunrise Phase 2 from 7th of February to the 6th of April. This second phase is also reserved for other prior rights holders protected under their national law after which registration is thrown open to all on the basis of “first ask first get”
I must commend Eurid for a job well done. The expected bombardment of their servers by registrars jostling to submit their clients’ registration request was easily accommodated by their system. They showed that they have learnt from the past mistakes made by previous registries such as .uk and .de for the United Kingdom and Germany respectively on their first day of trading by ensuring that they allocated more than enough resources to cope with the demands that goes with such a day.
Many people have wondered if another top level domain name for Europe is needed when each country within the European Union already has their own, such as .uk for the United Kingdom and .fr for France. However, if there was no point in creating it, I am sure that it would not have gone beyond the deliberation stage of the European Union Parliament nor would it have created the excitement it did beyond that stage. As it is, the extension .eu domains are already being registered, and soon you will start coming across them.
