What’s Christmas to You?

Posted in General at 7:46 pm by lanre

I will like to apologise to my very proffesional minded collegues and hope that they will find this an interseting read. I just had this urge to share my thoughts with others and hope that they will share theirs with me too.

When I was a toddler I used to see Xmas as an opportunity to feast and get new shoes and cloths. I am from Lagos, Nigeria you see. And it was fun visiting families and friends christians and muslims alike during this time eating from one home to the other and believe it or not we used to even get tips (for a lack of better word to discribe this) for visiting and the more the money given, the better the chance of that household to see me next year.

But now with my wide knowledge and understanding of other cultures, I realised that although in all it is fun and relaxing -thank God for holidays- the origin of it was with Jesus Christ. It is a mass to celebrate the humble birth of Jesus in the manger. It is actually a mass to celebrate the birth of Christ. Although now there is no mass for me to attend, I think in the mist of the eating and drinking we still need to remember whose birthday this holiday is to celebrate.

It came as a shock to me when I first learnt that the 25th of December was not the day he was born and as such there are other christmas days depending on your christian faith or even no celebration at all if you are a Jehovah Witness. I think I will rather have a christmas than not have it at all.

If you read this blog. It will be nice if you can take the time to just share what christmas means to you and if you chose not to the choice is yours :) I wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

.eu Registration

Posted in Domain Names at 8:56 pm by lanre

EURid( the registry operator for .eu domain name ) has finally began accepting applications for the much awaited Sunrise Phase 1 on the 7th of December 2005. This first phase which will last till the 6th of February is meant only for Public Bodies and Holders of Registered Trademark. This will then be followed by the Sunrise Phase 2 from 7th of February to the 6th of April. This second phase is also reserved for other prior rights holders protected under their national law after which registration is thrown open to all on the basis of “first ask first get”

I must commend Eurid for a job well done. The expected bombardment of their servers by registrars jostling to submit their clients’ registration request was easily accommodated by their system. They showed that they have learnt from the past mistakes made by previous registries such as .uk and .de for the United Kingdom and Germany respectively on their first day of trading by ensuring that they allocated more than enough resources to cope with the demands that goes with such a day.

Many people have wondered if another top level domain name for Europe is needed when each country within the European Union already has their own, such as .uk for the United Kingdom and .fr for France. However, if there was no point in creating it, I am sure that it would not have gone beyond the deliberation stage of the European Union Parliament nor would it have created the excitement it did beyond that stage. As it is, the extension .eu domains are already being registered, and soon you will start coming across them.
